Bonehead Mania is a board game that was released by Troll Associates in 2000, the same year Millennium Bugs launched in Australia. The game was distributed by Pace Products Inc and retailed for $5.95 USD. It comes packaged with 4 Millennium Bugs. Moose Toys is not mentioned on the board game or any of the included cards, figures or pamphlets.
Troll was a company which specialized in children's educational games, books and publishing. As advertised on the website in the early 2000s "For more than 40 years Troll has worked to inspire young minds and encourage reading among America's children. In doing so, Troll has created a well-respected brand name that has become synonymous with high quality children's literature among educators, parents, and children."[1]. As such the board game is an educational one. Featuring questions about math, science and general educational trivia.
The contents of the game include four Millennium Bugs, a six sided dice, one double-sided board game pamphlet, one instruction pamphlet and eighteen cards.
The game only includes solid finishes for the figures and cuts the glitter and glow in the dark variants seen in the Moose Toys release of Millennium Bugs. The characters also lack the painted numbers normally featured on the game. Instead only including a stamped in "China" label.
Story[]
A year ago, the Boneheads landed their spaceship on the roof of a mall. Full of excitement, they ran into the mall to explore. In one of the stores the Boneheads discovered a strange-looking piece of machinery. They jumped into the machine to have a look around. While they were inside, the machine was shut and locked, and they were trapped! The Boneheads soon learned that the machine was an arcade game. They were forced to play the game each time a player inserted a quarter. One day the game broke down and a repairman came to fix it. He opened up the game, and when he turned his back the Boneheads escaped. They met at the entrance to the arcade, then ran through the mall, trying to find their way out. In the game "Return to Planet Numskull," the Boneheads want to return to their home planet, called Numskull. The object of the game is to get the Boneheads to their spaceship, which is on the roof of the mall.
Games[]
Return to Planet Numskull[]
Return to Planet Numskull is the main game in Bonehead Mania. Taking up the entirety of Side A of the board game pamphlet.
Instructions[]
Two to four people can play the game. Use the Boneheads as game pieces. Unfold the game board and place it on a flat surface.
The goal of the game is to reach the Bonehead spaceship. The first player to reach the spaceship wins. 1. Place the Boneheads at the Arcade entrance. Shuffle the cards and place them facedown next to the game board. To determine who goes first, each player should roll the die. The person who rolls the highest number (whom we'll call Player A) starts the game.
2. First, Player A rolls the die and moves his or her piece that many squares. The other player (Player B) picks up the top card and reads Player A a question in the category marked on the square Player A lands on.
3. If Player A answers correctly, he or she can roll the die and go again on his or her next turn. But if Player A answers incorrectly or doesn't know the answer, he or she must stay on that square and wait for the next turn to try to answer another question in that category correctly.
4. Next, Player B takes a turn, following 2 and 3 above, and Player C (or Player A if it is a two-person game) reads the question. Players take turns rolling the die and answering questions until one of the players reaches the Bonehead spaceship.
Important! Each time a question is read from one card, that card should be placed at the bottom of the pile. Players can choose a question in any category on "Your Choice" squares. If a player lands on a "Lose a Turn" square, he or she loses a turn for that round. The player should resume playing in the next round. To resume play, move to the next square and answer a question in that category. If a player gets a question that has already been asked in the game, the card should be placed at the bottom of the pile and another card should be drawn, until a new question comes up.
Other Games[]
A number of other games you can play with the Bonehead Mania game set. These games are listed on side B of the game board pamphlet.
Target numskull Use the target on the other side of this page to play Target numskull. Place the target on a table. Stand above the game board and drop a Bonehead. If the Bonehead lands on the game board, the player receives the number of points indicated on the board. If the Bonehead bounces off the game board, the player gets another turn. The first person to reach a previously agreed-upon number of points wins.
Stack a Bonehead Try to stack all four Boneheads at once. The first person who succeeds in stacking the Boneheads wins.
Grab a Bonehead Play this game with three to five people. In the center of a table, place one less Bonehead than there are players. Agree upon a certain number-3, for example. Players should take turns rolling the die. When someone rolls a 3, everyone must grab a Bonehead. The person who does not get a Bonehead loses. One of the players should keep score and give one point to the player who does not grab a Bonehead. Once the score is recorded, the players should return the Boneheads to the center of the table. The player with the most points at the end of the game (which is when everyone is tired of playing) loses.
Bounce a Bonehead Place a paper or plastic cup in the center of a table. Try to get the Boneheads into the cup by bouncing them once onto the table, then into the cup.
Hide the Bonehead Two or more players can play this game. One player leaves the room. The players left in the room hide a Bonehead. The player who had left the room returns and tries to guess where the Bonehead is hidden. When that player gets close, the players who hid the Bonehead tell him he is "hot." When he gets farther away from the hidden Bonehead, the other players tell him he is "cold." The game continues until the player finds the Bonehead. Then the other players can take turns.
