Explorer is the third series of the modern era overall, and as the title of the series suggests, it involves Gogo's that have taken a liking to exploring and expeditions. It was released in European countries in early 2009, and was released in summer 2011 in the US.
The Explorer series features 80 brand new characters that each come in five colours. The fifth colour of each Gogo is a pearlescent and somewhat metallic color that is referred to as a laser finish. The laser finish made its debut in this set, but would later return for specific special figures in other series such as Megatrip and England 2010.
Similar to the past two series, Explorer comes with four sets of five colour schemes, with each scheme having only 4 base colours per figure, the fifth being the colour of the rarer laser finish. Many characters from the Explorer series would reappear in other Gogo's products, such as the Gold Tin collection, the Superstar series, and the official trading card game.

- This is the first post-Series 1 series to feature brand new molds for the characters, as the Evolution series reused molds from Series 1.
- This is also the first series where the colour for the packaging is not in a primary colour.
- Following the release of this series in the UK, a free Mosh was given out with a "laser" finish from British toy shop chain The Entertainer.
